Flu Bug

I got hit with the flu bug this week. I have been taking it easy and grateful for PBS kids and movies from the library. The girls have been relatively cooperative and understanding especially when Daddy is gone to class. I am beginning to feel a little better and hoping that after a good night of sleep, I'll be ready to jump back into life (slowly at first, though).

The girls were both wanting to get out of the house this afternoon. Peanut kept asking if we could go somewhere but took it well when I told her we could not. Pumpkin who was running around in her diaper was ready to go when she saw Daddy getting ready to leave. This is what she looked like minutes after she saw him putting his shoes on. All one needs is a hat and pajama pants, right? (Be sure to check out how those pants are on.)
Ready to go!

Preschool

Our big girl...our firstborn has started preschool. Her first day was this past Wednesday and she was over the moon. She could not wait to carry her red bucket and yellow folder to school. There was not a hint of anxiety or a shred of nervousness. She was confident and she showed it. It made our hearts soar to watch her take this really big step.
1st Day of Preschool
She walked into class and didn't look back. I was a little sad but after years of teaching preschool, I know how awesome that is for her.
1st Day of Preschool
Her favorite thing to tell us after school is if someone lost a stick out of their behavior jar. She's keeping track! She likes to tell us all about the snacks they have too and what she made.

She has two official days under her belt now...one of which she got to wear her jammies for pajama day for the letter P. After her first day of class Pumpkin and I took her out for lunch and let her pick the place. She picked Bob and Olie's (her imaginary friends) favorite pizza place, Pizza Hut!

Yikes

It's been a rough few days here in our house. The flu bug hit Pumpkin last Wednesday with a vengeance. We thought the rest of us were in the all clear until Daddy came down with it on Sunday afternoon. He is still feeling yucky but did make it to most of his classes this afternoon.

On top of that Pumpkin had a couple of immunizations yesterday which made for a VERY grumpy little girl last night. Grumpy really isn't even the word to describe it. Might I add that she didn't get a nap either so this just made it even more interesting. Today was a little better but...WOW! I'm ready for her to not scream and cry at the drop of a hat and maybe to stop throwing things at me and to not push her sister's last buttons.
Hat
Bedtime could not come fast enough tonight!

She did super well with her shots though. She screamed as soon as she felt that needle but when she saw that sucker, she was all good.
Sucker!
(Guess who won't keep a barrette in her hair!)

And this little girl...well she watched her sister get shots because she wants to be a nurse when she grows up AND SHE STARTS PRESCHOOL TOMORROW!
Sucker!

Excitement

There is excitement in our household. The first bit of news that has caused a stir of excitement is a new member has been added to our family. We are pet owners again. Gigi had a stray cat show up at his house that would not leave and the girls fell in love with him, so we finally made the decision to bring him home with us. This was made promptly after watching Pumpkin carry the cat in the choke hold and it didn't try to scratch or harm her. We are certainly keeping an eye on how much "love" she gives the kitty.
Simon
Peanut adores the kitty and keeps close tabs on him. She makes sure that he stays off the table and counter tops and gets after him if he doesn't. She is in love with having a pet of her very own! He is quite a cat too. When we brought him home, it was as if he had always been with us. He got out of the carrier and just relaxed. He must have already been litter trained because there has been no need to train. (Oh, how I didn't miss litter...oh well!) He fits in perfectly and is SO laid back! It's crazy! He lets Peanut just carry him around. He is a little unsure about Pumpkin but "puts up with" her antics very well.
Simon
If you recall, our last cat was named Arthur after Art Garfunkel since Daddy is a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan. SO...take a guess what our newest pet has been named...Simon, in honor of Paul Simon.

Our other bit of news...well let me show you Peanut's excited face regarding this news...it's a bit blurry but that smile, that's perfect!
Preschool Bound
SHE'S GOING TO PRESCHOOL!!!!! The above pic was taken the day after we told her. I wish we had a pic from the day we told her or better yet, video. She could NOT stop grinning and hugged us at least 10 times. She was ECSTATIC! Tomorrow she and I head out to visit one and hopefully she'll be on her way next week! Pumpkin was excited too although she may not have understood why.
Sweetie Pie
She's going to get some one-on-one Mama time which will be good for both of us.

Mama's Birthday

My birthday was celebrated while we were up north also. The number won't be posted here because...well frankly....I think I'm to the point where it's better just left unsaid. Ha! Not sure how I have creeped up in years so fast. I do know that motherhood has sped things along rather quickly! Here are some pics from a little surprise pulled at Gigi's house.
Happy Birthday Mommy!

Happy Birthday Mommy!
Have to include this one of Pumpkin sniffing my birthday flowers because she's just too cute!
Happy Birthday Mommy!
We had decided prior to our trip that we would head back to our home on January 5 but on January 4 Daddy asked me if there was any reason we couldn't be gone longer. He planned a little get away for us for my birthday. We left the girls with Dobbie and Papa and took a train to Chicago for 2 days and one night. It was great fun. We both love Chicago and used to go quite a bit. Sadly we had not been there for probably 6 years! We stayed right downtown thanks to Travelocity.

We were too early to check in so we went to Starbucks where I read in peace for a bit and Daddy planned our time. We ate Chicago pizza then we checked in to our hotel which was caddy corner to the Chicago Public Library. Next we headed off to Willis (which will always be Sears) Tower.
Chicago
Daddy was brave enough to do The Ledge which I am not ashamed to say I was not. If that ledge went teetering off the side of the tower someone had to still be around for the girls so it was out of duty to my kids. (Heehee!) Just watching Daddy creep very slowly out onto The Ledge made my heart race and my palms clammy. IT.WAS.INSANE! I want to know who was assigned the job of first person out on the ledge after it was built AND do they know for sure how much weight those things can hold AND can it withstand people jumping. So many questions!!!!! My heart is racing right now. Ha!
Chicago
After our near death...okay, enough with the drama...after our experience, we took in Macy's Christmas decor. Love, love, love Macy's at Christmas. I was so excited to see that they still had their things out. It made me feel better that mine was still up at home collecting dust.

Daddy wanted desperately to ride the "L" while we were there. I being the trusting, never doubting wife thought for sure we would end up in Yonkers and not be able to find our way back. (BTW, I do know that Yonkers is in New York!) We did just fine if I do say so myself and made it to Lincoln Park to walk around awhile and enjoy some nice warm Starbucks. Did I mention that it was COLD????
Chicago
We headed back downtown and found a very yummy Indian restaurant to eat at. We love, love, love Indian food so this was a special treat. Daddy had Chicken Saag, I had Butter Chicken, we split an order of Vegetable Somosas.

After a wonderful night of sleep and sleeping in for the first time in Pumpkin's life, we headed out for a brisk 20 block walk where I tripped into a street and Daddy saw my life flash before his eyes. Thankfully there were no cars coming! Whew! We had a leisurely lunch at The Cheesecake Factory which Daddy declared a "tourist trap" but I didn't care one bit as we shared a piece of tiramisu cheesecake!

Heading back south into town, we stopped by The American Girl Place to pick the girls up a small Chicago transportation present. It was the stuff that little girls dream of. Peanut would melt into a puddle of exhilaration if she gets to go someday!
Chicago
Our final stop was The Art Institute. We had just over an hour to take it in which is not enough time by any means so we just meandered and saw what we could see. We both had been there before so that was helpful. It was also free admission!!! My favorite thing is this enormous painting...AMAZING!
Chicago
A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat

We had a wonderful time. Chicago is by far one of our favorite places!
Chicago
My actual birthday, January 8 was our first day back at home so Daddy let me sleep in (which I took very full advantage of) and we just relaxed all day, catching up from our trip. I didn't even have to cook thanks to pizza delivery! Awesome!

Northward Bound

After our time with Daddy's siblings, we headed back to Dobbie and Papa's for a few days and then spent a few days with Gigi. We got to relax and see some friends. We also all brought in the New Year together. Here are Daddy, Peanut and I minutes after the ball had dropped and 2011 had started. Pumpkin was already tucked snugly into bed by this point.
Happy New Year
Daddy took up the art of silly balloon hat creating for our New Year's shindig. (I can NOT get over how grown up Peanut looks in this picture. How did that happen?)
Happy New Year
There were a few more gifts for the girls to open from friends during our visit. Here Papa is teaching Peanut the fine art of ironing one's socks, a much needed skill, on her new ironing board!
Happy New Year
We were able to attend church with Gigi with the girls wearing their cute new Christmas dresses. He loves showing them off to his church friends and I think they loved being shown off too.
Christmas Sisters
The girls had great fun playing with Dobbie and Papa's kitties. Pumpkin even shared her blanket with a sleeping cat which says alot because she goes nowhere without that blanket.
Happy New Year
The highlight of the time was after our first night at Dobbie and Papa's when I discovered a piece from my new necklace was missing. I thought for sure it had been swept up as we had just swept. I explained what it looked like to Dobbie and she thought she had picked it up, thought it was just a tag from a toy and threw it in the trash. This next picture is true love displayed for me. These two dug through 4 trash bags containing LOTS of coffee grounds looking for a tiny piece of my necklace. (I dug too! Don't worry!)
Lost Jewelery
After digging through one of the 4 bags one more time, there it was...the lost piece! Whew!!!!
Lost Jewelery
(NOT a flattering picture but I was so excited that we had found it!!!!)

Christmas: Part 4

We got to meet up with Daddy's family a few days after Christmas. We all met at a hotel for a day and night of fun of catching up. The kids got to swim and play and just be together. It is such a blessing to watch the cousins all together and see how they get along and crave that time together. It wasn't about getting presents for them but about hanging out together (don't worry...the presents weren't forgotten about). How awesome is that?
Family Christmas
Peanut had a ball playing with her cousin who is closest to her age. They are quite a little pair to watch.
Family Christmas
We got to celebrate Dobbie's birthday all together with cake and gifts too!
Family Christmas
Everyone got t-shirts/sweatshirts from Dobbie and Papa's time in New England. Here is Peanut sporting her Cape Cod t-shirt.
Family Christmas
I had so much fun making the dolls for our girls that I made one to give to our littlest cousin too. The kids all exchanged names and Pumpkin got her name so it worked out to do that.
Family Christmas
The adult couples exchanged names also and we made family baskets to give to those whose name we drew. We had fun putting together a family fun night basket for Daddy's sister's family. We found some great deals on small games to put in the basket, a Shaun the Sheep DVD (our current favorite kid series), hot chocolate, popcorn and popcorn cups from the Target Dollar bin. It was so much fun to make!
Family Christmas
Daddy and I got a coffee themed set! I wonder why...probably because we are coffee addicts!
Family Christmas
I'm not sure who has more fun playing games together, the nieces and nephew or the Uncle. Hmmm....

We had a wonderful time together although it went way too fast. We are so grateful we got to have that time together for Christmas especially since our families are spread out.

Christmas: Part 3

We had a very relaxing Christmas Day at home. The girls woke up in their own beds and got to come down and see their tree with presents and a letter from Santa. They were pretty excited with the things Santa brought for them. Peanut got some new things for her doll house including a baby and nursery set, a horse, and a few new people. Pumpkin got the Crayola Color Me a Song board. They had fun playing with these new things while we waited for the rest of our troop to wake up.
Christmas Day
Once everyone was up we were ready to open presents. Peanut's style is to open everything very quickly and then wonder why there is nothing else to open. Pumpkin took her time wanting to open the toys and get them out as she opened them.
Christmas Day
Daddy scored some new clothes that were on his wish list and a surprise t-shirt from his favorite podcast. By the way, Daddy did a fabulous job with my wish list. I found several pieces of jewelery that I loved from Etsy and emailed him a list. That's all I got...handmade earrings and necklaces from Etsy and I was over the moon! I will try to remember to post some pics of what he got me.
Christmas Day
I made both girls a doll this year for their handmade gift. They loved them. Peanut was found holding "Eddie" later in the day while sucking her thumb and watching a movie. Pumpkin knows which one is her baby and has claimed ownership.
Christmas Day
The Christmas stockings were the last to be gone through and were filled with socks, underwear, and Target dollar bin goodies.
Christmas Day
The sunglasses were a hit!
Christmas Day
We had a quiet day together of talking, eating, playing fun games, and just basking in the meaning of the day.
Christmas Day
Watching the day unfold through the eyes of our girls is a magical thing. I am so, so, so thankful that I have been called to be a Mommy and blessed with the two most priceless treasures that I could ever imagine.
